Shadow of the Eternals is probably done for if Kickstarter fails

Precursor Games is struggling to gain momentum with Shadow of the Eternals, the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness. Moving the crowdfunding campaign from its website to Kickstarter hasn't helped attract more backers. The game is stuck at 8 percent funding with a little more than half a month to go.

And if that number doesn't improve, Precursor could abandon the game entirely.

It's "unlikely" that the developer will continue working on the game if the campaign flops, according to chief operating officer Shawn Jackson in a Reddit Ask Me Anything thread.

"We will entertain all options to make this game a reality because we believe in this project," he said. "However, we can’t be sure a publisher will share our vision for interacting with the community during development or this would work in the traditional model."

And if the Kickstarter fails, the entire campaign will collapse, too.

"If the project does not reach it’s goal on Kickstarter, we will refund all pledges made through PayPal on our own site," said Jackson.

I'd like to see Shadow of the Eternals succeed if only because I enjoyed Eternal Darkness on the GameCube, but a number of obstacles — distrust in former Silicon Knights developers, limited platforms — may very well prevent that from happening. The Kickstarter has a lot of ground to cover in these last 18 days.
