Sledgehammer Games Confirms Call of Duty: WWII Will Not Feature an Axis Campaign

Sledgehammer Games, the developers behind Call of Duty: WWII, have been talking on Twitter about their upcoming title. Their upcoming title is meant to go back to the roots of Call of Duty, which is deeply entrenched in World War II. While there are many perspectives that could be covered in the second Great War, none of the Axis powers will be featured as playable perspectives in the new game's campaign.

This, of course, doesn't apply to multiplayer, but the story-based campaign will not feature playable Nazis for example. Many titles in the Call of Duty franchise have featured multiple perspectives. Famously, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 featured a level where players controlled terrorists massacring civilians in an airport, something that sat very uneasily with the press when it released in 2009.

Is Sledgehammer trying to avoid another controversy in the series? It's possible, although many fans appreciated the rawness of Modern Warfare 2 which was the best selling game the year of its release and is still heralded to this day. It's also possible that they had a deeper story to tell on the Allied front.

We'll have to see for ourselves when it releases in November. In other news, rumors of a Switch version have been on the rise with a website update.
