PlanetSide 2 is still expected to release on PlayStation 4 in 2014, but the date that was posted to the game's PlayStation Store page was merely just a placeholder.
Yesterday, the PlayStation Store had updated PlanetSide 2's release date to December 31, 2014, prompting rumors of that being the release date. Responding to the speculation, SOE has confirmed that the "12/31/2014" date was "just a placeholder."
Placeholder dates like this are not uncommon for video game releases. Retailers tend to either place the last date of the month a game is due out, or the last day of the year to signify that it'll be released sometime before that day. Of course, this is also how rumors start to spread which is probably why Sony has since changed it back to just "2014."
If anything, the debacle at least confirms that PlanetSide 2 is still due out sometime in 2014. Earlier this month, SOE community manager Tony "RadarX" Jones hinted that more news regarding PlanetSide 2 on PS4 would be shared "soon," but we've yet to hear anything official yet.
With PlayStation Experience — the next big Sony event — planned for December 6-7, I assume that this could be the date SOE announces PlanetSide 2's beta release on PS4. None of my speculation has been confirmed by SOE, and the only thing they keep telling me is "2014."
