An official teardown video of the PlayStation 5 shows Sony’s next-gen system right up to its bare metal. While we knew the PS5 would be a nifty little machine, we now know that there is cutting edge technology under its hood. You can watch the informative video here!
Sony has been following a rather passive strategy when it comes to marketing its new home console. At least compared to Microsoft who has been talking and showing the Xbox Series for many months now. This led to team green getting a lot of mindshare for the next generation of gaming.
Today, Sony has decided to lay bare what they have in their hands. Quite literally, as we get to witness the PlayStation 5 console being stripped right to its components at the hands of Masayasu Ito, the Executive Vice President of at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Not only do we see exactly how the console is built, but we also learn about its upgrade possibilities. Similar to the Xbox Series, the PlayStation 5 features a built-in NVMe SSD that cannot be replaced. Instead, you can add an additional one by removing the outer shell of the console.
While Microsoft has gone for a proprietary Storage Expansion Card solution, the PlayStation 5 will allow the use of regular M.2 NVMe SSDs. These are very common PC parts and are offered by a multitude of companies that could make their prices cheaper than on the Xbox.
Another highlight reveal from the teardown video is the cooling solution of the PS5. Anyone with a PS4 Pro will attest that the console can get fairly loud which can be attributed to that system’s temps getting simply too hot.
Sony engineers look to have learned quite a bit from that experience and beefed up the PlayStation 5 with a massive 120mm fan and a huge heatsink. The real kicker though is the use of actual liquid metal right on the SOC (System on a Chip) that aims to deliver the ultimate heat transfer and keep the PS5 both cool and quiet.
It’s really impressive engineering that went into the console, and we can’t wait to experience it first-hand on November 12th when the PS5 launches in North America and November 19th the rest of the world.
