Sony releases software update 4.46 to fix bricked PS3s

Sony has released a new update that resolves the issue that impacted a number of PlayStation 3 consoles last week. The previously released 4.45 update, which was removed shortly after the issue was discovered, caused a "small number" of PS3 systems to become unresponsive; the console would freeze on the dashboard without the XMB menu appearing and, in some cases, the entire system would become unresponsive to the power button.

The new 4.46 system software update looks to fix that. It's a three step process that requires you to manually download the system sofware update, activate safe mode on your PS3, and manually update the software. It seems to be a fairly lengthy process with quite a few steps. Here are the full directions on how to perform the manual update and restore your systems' functionality.
