Sony’s Project Morpheus VR headset to release in first half of 2016

Sony has confirmed plans to release their Virtual Reality (VR) headset, Project Morpheus, in the first half of 2016. The release window has been rumored for quite a while, but Sony recently confirmed it during a presentation to investors on future strategies and plans.

The presentation revealed more than the release window for Project Morpheus. Sony plans on developing and releasing more first-party PS4/Vita exclusive games, support third part publishers and developers, and improve PS Plus amongst other things.

The Project Morpheus that will hit store shelves will not be the same headset that was revealed in 2014. The system has undergone a number of upgrades:

  • OLED display: Upgraded from a 5 inch LCD to a 5.7 inch 1920 X RGB X 1080 resolution OLED display.
  • 120hz refresh rate: Up from 60hz, meaning games for Morpheus can be rendered at 120fps.
  • Super low latency: Reduced latency to less than 18ms, about half of what the first Morpheus prototype had.
  • More accurate tracking: Positional tracking will be more precise, thanks to three LEDs to the headset – one on the front and two on the side – for a total of nine LEDs, supporting robust 360 degree tracking.

It looks like by the end of next year we will have tons of VR headset options.

[Thanks, Gaf]
