Sony sells over 1 million PS4 within 24 hours of launch

PlayStation 4 sales surpassed the one million mark within the console's first 24 hours at retail, Sony announced over the weekend. Sony's next-gen system launched in North America on November 15, so this number is restricted to U.S. and Canada sales only; it'll release in Europe on November 29, and Japan on February 22, 2014.

Earlier this year, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton predicted three million sales by the end of the year. With the system selling over one million in North America, and the European launch still to come, that goal is looking increasingly more obtainable. Sony expects that figure to rise to five million by the end of the company's fiscal year in March 2014. By then the system will have also been released in Japan, so things are looking good for Sony.

Overall sales success aside, Sony's PS4 has been receiving some flak from consumers who are experiencing issues with the system. Of the 2,000-plus reviews on Amazon, more than 600 have scored the system 1-star, noting malfunctioning hardware.

Despite the complaints and numerous videos online, Sony maintains that the number of affected PS4 systems represents "less than .04% of shipped units to date," which is actually within the company's expectations. The company also claims that the issues reported are nothing more than a few "isolated incidents" and nothing to be too concerned over.
