Square Enix demonstrates next-gen Final Fantasy technology

At E3, Square Enix presented a demonstration of what next-generation Final Fantasy games could look like using their new engine, Luminous Studio.

Yoshihisa Hashimoto, chief technology officer, insisted that the trailer — called "Agni’s Philosophy: Final Fantasy Real Time Tech Demo" — was in real-time and did not contain any pre-rendered footage.

The video shows soldiers interrupting a ritual that sends a girl, one of the mages protecting the priest, fleeing with a precious crystal after his death. She heals herself and barely manages to survive a hyena-like creature's attack before finishing the incantation, summoning a powerful monster. Afterward, she flies away on what appears to be the same being — perhaps a dragon — and we can see more of the world at large.

Hashimoto also showed how those scenes could be manipulated with the technology by altering hair color and form and tweaking the lighting.

Luminous Studio is expected to support consoles, PC, smartphones, and the web.
