Star Wars: The Force Awakens report shuts down Supreme Leader Snoke theory

While many are debating the lineage of Rey, there's another in Star Wars: The Force Awakens' whose true identity remains a mystery: Supreme Leader Snoke.

***Warning: Possible Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoilers***

Supreme Leader Snoke (played by Andy Serkis) was shown only briefly in The Force Awakens, and only in the form of a hologram. Fans, however, have studied those moments on screen, analyzing everything from his appearance to his commands. The result has been a fan theory speculating him to be Darth Plagueis, the Sith legend Supreme Chancellor Palpatine shares with Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).

As the legend goes, Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith "so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life" and "could even keep the ones he cared about from dying." Eventually, his apprentice, Darth Sidious (Palpatine), would kill him in his sleep only after he had passed along all of his knowledge of the Dark Side.

Of course, Palpatine at the time is playing to Anakin's fear of losing Padme in an effort to lure him to the Dark Side. He ends the conversation that "It's ironic that he could save others from death, but not himself." And that's where the fan theory comes in, with many speculating that Supreme Leader Snoke is actually Dark Plagueis who somehow managed to survive. In addition to analyzing his appearance and dialogue, some have even taken to the film's musical score to note similarities between the soundtrack during the Palpatine/Anakin scene In Revenge of the Sith and "Snoke's Theme" in The Force Awakens.

While the evidence is there, it unfortunately isn't true. At least that's according to a new report from Entertainment Weekly which writes:

"Although there was much speculation about who Snoke might turn out to be (one popular theory was that he’d turn out to be a Sith Lord known from the prequels as Darth Plagueis) he actually turns out to be … just Snoke."

The write-up mostly centers on bringing to life the CGI characters Maz Kanata and Supreme Leader Snoke; however, there's a bit taken from a November interview in which Serkis opens up about his character. He reveals that Snoke is aware of the events from the earlier films "but was a new addition to the storyline."

“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful,” Serkis said in November. “Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”

Do you believe Serkis and Entertainment Weekly, or do you still think Supreme Leader Snoke is Darth Plagueis?
