Super Smash Bros. 3DS sells over one million copies in U.S.

Hot of the heels of the NPD Group's sales report for October, Nintendo has announced that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has already sold 1.2 million combined physical and digital units in the United States alone. Nintendo's flagship brawler — which released on October 3 — sold more than 485,000 units in October, and has become the best-selling handheld title so far in 2014.

Furthermore, it has become the 10th Nintendo 3DS game to sell at least one million units in the United States, joining the following titles:

Title Total Units*
Mario Kart 7 3.62 million
Super Mario 3D Land 3.34 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 2.33 million
Pokémon X 2.11 million
Pokémon Y 2.03 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D 1.41 million
Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon 1.36 million
Animal Crossing: New Leaf 1.42 million
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS 1.20 million
The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 1.06 million

It's an impressive list that only seems destined to grow with the release of the new Pokémon adventures – Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire – next week on November 21.

The Nintendo 3DS wasn't the only system to receive good news. Nintendo also announced that Wii U hardware sales for the first 10 months of 2014 are up 47 percent year-over year. Those numbers are also sure to grow as Super Smash Bros. Wii U and amiibo — Nintendo's new line of interactive figures — release on November 21 as well.
