Super Smash Bros. on the 3DS will feature an exclusive mode, Smash Run

Today we learned about the differences between the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game on the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U. While many of the elements are similar, the two will have some exclusive stages bound to each version. However, Sakurai did reveal that the 3DS version will be getting an exclusive mode called Smash Run.

In this mode, four players will be unleashed upon an interconnected level, where they must not only battle each other, but other iconic enemies from famous franchises, and try to power up their character within a five minute time limit. Players will pick up various icons representing strength, speed, defense, etc. When the five minutes are up, the picked up items are accumulated and then strengthen each character. At that point, the four players duke it out in a brawl. You can check out the map layout below.

Sakurai stated that the inspiration behind this mode came from another game he worked on, Kirby's Air Ride. Check out what the game looks like in these screenshots below.
