Take this for what it's worth, but Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is confident that Grand Theft Auto 5 will blow people away, regardless of the delayed launch and the impending arrival of next-gen game consoles.
"Look, Grand Theft Auto stands alone. It’s a unique property. And I think we’re all extraordinarily excited about this title, and we think it’s just going to blow people away frankly at a level I don’t think anyone properly anticipates yet," Zelnick told a group of investors and reporters during the company's Q3 2013 earnings call.
Despite the incredible hype leading up to the game's highly anticipated release, there was some worry that GTA 5's delay into a September launch could impact the reception and overall sales, especially with next-gen consoles presumably on the horizon.
Zelnick seemed pretty confident in stating, "There is not one gamer who’s going to sit it out of Grand Theft Auto 5 hoping that something down the road is going to come along that’s better. Grand Theft Auto 5 is going to blow everyone away, and it will be in the market in September."
As for why the game was pushed back, Zelnick basically echoed Rockstar's earlier statements. "The reason that the title is coming out in September is because that’s the time required to make sure it’s everything everyone expects and then some."
He concluded: "As it happens, I think September is a great window. The fact is it’s a very open field that early in the fall. And as between late spring heading into the summer doldrums or early fall in an open field, that wasn’t the reason that the title moved, but I think it happens to be a terrific time to launch it."
Grand Theft Auto 5 is officially due out on September 17, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Although there seems to be demand for it, there has been no word on whether the game will launch on PC. However, we have seen quite a few leaks pointing to an eventual PC release.
