City commissioners in Alamogordo, New Mexico may excavate one of the world's most notoriously bad video games: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600.
Or at least, they'll find out if nine semitrucks ever actually buried millions of games there and filled them over with concrete.
Joe Lewandowski, who ran a garbage company in 1983 — the year Atari arranged to dispose the merchandise in an Alamogordo landfill — claims he knows where the dump site is.
Now Alamogordo's City Commission has struck a deal with Fuel Industries, a Canadian film production and entertainment company, to dig up the games in that location and make a documentary about it.
Fuel Industries has six months to search the site — all during the 30-year anniversary of the famous event.
"I hope more people find out about Alamogordo through this opportunity that we have to unearth the Atari games in the landfill," said the city's mayor, Susie Galea.
