As most people walked out of the theater following the completion of Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2, they figured it was the end of their adventures watching Katniss Everdeen. After all, she has to run out of arrows at SOME point, right? Well, Lionsgate has confirmed more films are on the way.
Don't get too excited too quickly, however. These follow up movies will be prequels and show the origins of how the Hunger Games were formed. According to Variety, Michael Burns, the Vice Chairman at Lionsgate, made the announcement to those in attendance at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference which took place in New York last week. Although he did not go into detail on how they would proceed or how many prequels there would be, he did say that the franchise "Will live on and on".
I got into the Hunger Games late but have seen all of them excluding Mockingjay Part 2. It's on the list though, don't worry. One thing that is evident about the Hunger Games is that Jennifer Lawrence makes the films what they are. Prequel films obviously won't have her in it if other than a brief cameo or else they wouldn't really flow well with the genre. Lionsgate does need to be careful here, however, as continuing a franchise without the film's main star could be a recipe for jumping the shark. Hopefully we'll get more details soon but for now I suggest remaining very cautiously optomistic.
