Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed The Last of Us is being made into a movie. As reported by Deadline, Screen Gems has signed on to distribute the live-action adaptation of the PlayStation 3 exclusive video game.
Neil Druckmann, who served as the game's creative director, will reportedly write the script. Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra will also be involved, along with Evil Dead director Sam Raimi and Ghost House Pictures.
The Last of Us was released for PlayStation 3 in June 2013. It received glowing reviews with many praising the writing, voice acting, sound design and art direction — all things that are critical to a film. The Last of Us made for an excellent game, but how it'll translate to the big screen remains the big question. Videogame to movie adaptations don't typically end well — mostly because directors take the film adaptation into a totally different direction — but judging by the logline it doesn't seem too much will be different.
Hardened survivor Joel teams with young and capable companion Ellie to journey through a radically transformed world some 20 years after an infectious pandemic ravages humanity. The game has won numerous awards and has been a big seller since its release last summer.
Of course, with the film seemingly so similar to the actual game one has to ask: is there really a purpose of turning The Last of Us into a movie?
