We've heard it time and time again, there's plenty of stories Naughty Dog could tell in the universe established by The Last of Us. While the studio is still on the fence about a sequel, the game's creator, Neil Druckmann, has revealed that one such story could focus on Ellie's mom.
Speaking to Wired, Druckmann confirmed that he still has a script written about Ellie's mom that was originally intended as an animated short. Unfortunately, it fell through.
"I'd love for that to see the light of day sometime, maybe as DLC or a comic book," Druckmann said. As for Naughty Dog's next project, he acknowledged that the studio is still "brainstorming."
"Some of the ideas are sequel ideas and some are brand-new IP. We’re just trying to see where our passions lie," he explained. "Is there more to do here [in The Last of Us] both on a mechanical level or a narrative level, so we’re not repeating ourselves? Or is it this a good point to say goodbye to the characters in this world?
"It’s a very heavy decision, because whichever direction we go in commits us for the next three to four years. So we’re going to take several weeks to make that decision."
Should Naughty Dog decide not to work on a sequel, Druckmann said he'd still like to revisit the characters and world of The Last of Us in the future. So while Naughty Dog's next project may not be a sequel to one of the best PlayStation 3 games ever, it's possible that we could see another entry some time in the future.
