Just two days ago, sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. was prepping for a "relaunch of The Matrix." Today, Zak Penn, the screenwriter who is supposedly in negotiations to write the film's first draft took to Twitter to clarify a pretty major detail. According to him, the movie is neither a "reboot" or a "remake" and called the report "inaccurate news."
Here's the tweet:
Can't comment yet except to say that the words "reboot" and "remake" were from an article. Let's stop responding to inaccurate news.

Later on, Penn tweeted a desire to see more stories set within The Matrix universe, seemingly pointing to a spinoff. Here's that tweet:

If it is indeed a spinoff, it would not be the first film to write a new story in The Matrix universe. The Animatrix, a collection of nine animated shorts, released all the way back in 2003 and provided some additional backstory for the world. Penn also tweeted that he felt that The Matrix should not be rebooted at all, and that "people who know Animatrix and the comics understand."
Keep tabs on this one. Hollywood, it seems, is not done with The Matrix.
