Earlier this month, the internet was crazy with the notion that one of Back to the Future: Part II's biggest predictions would come true — the Chicago Cubs would end their 100-plus year drought and win the 2015 World Series. It was a crazy prediction, but one that actually seemed possible when the Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Wild Card game and then went on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Divisional Series.
Fast forward a few days and two games through the National League Championship Series, the New York Mets are spoiling what could've been the greatest prediction ever made. Over the weekend, the two teams squared off in New York's Citi Field with the Mets winning both games convincingly. Now up 2 games to 0 (of a best of seven series), it looks like Cubs fans and Back to the Future enthusiasts will be denied their dream.
The series heads to Chicago now where the Cubs will hope to keep the dream of a 2015 World Series alive at Wrigley Field. Anyone who has watched these first two games, however, will realize how much of a longshot it seems right now. Not only are the Mets pitchers dominating the Cubs hitters, but New York's offense is incredibly hot.
The series resumes tomorrow October 20th, with game four scheduled for Wednesday, October 21st. It's entirely possible the Mets could end the Back to the Future: Part II prediction on the very same day that Marty and Doc travel to in the future in the film. Now that would be irony.
Of course, this is baseball we're talking about and strange things can happen in October.
