As expected, Sony has lifted the curtain on Ready At Dawn's upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, The Order: 1886. Easily one of the PS4's most anticipated titles, we finally have some more details regarding the gameplay, courtesy of a preview event and a newly released trailer.
Let's first get to the trailer which provides a brief background of the game's plot. You play as Galahad, a veteran member of the Order, a group of noble warriors who have come together to defend mankind from evil creatures known as half-breeds. The twist is that the game takes place during the start of the Industrial Revolution (in an alternate history), sparking civil unrest and rebellion by the very people the Order has sworn to protect. So not only will you be facing off against foul beasts, but also London's underclass who have risen up under the flag of The Rebellion.
At a preview event, Ready At Dawn presented a hands-off demo of the game. While it was a little rough around the edges, the goal was to show a bit of the game's exploration, combat, and cinematic moments. In terms of gameplay, The Order: 1886 seems like your standard third-person shooter, relying on cover-based mechanics with a few Quick Time Events thrown in.
The most notable takeaway from the event seems to be the way the game presents itself. By using the same 3D models for both cutscenes and gameplay — as the E3 trailer promised — The Order: 1886 is able to switch between cinematic presentation and gameplay rather seamlessly (technical issues aside).
It seems The Order: 1886 has some unique twists thanks to the alternate take on the Industrial Revolution. And it does a fantastic job of establishing a setting and environment, but worn-out gameplay mechanics seem to be this game's biggest hurdle moving forward. The Order: 1886 is due out some time in 2014 exclusively for PlayStation 4.
