This story trailer might clear it up for you, but if it doesn't it's because the assassin Shay has gone rogue on the Brotherhood.
Shay once trusted the Brotherhood, he felt as though he was working towards a common goal – but then they asked him to do something. This 'something' lead to the slaughter of innocents and Shay wasn't having that. He joined the Templar Order to exact his revenge on the Brotherhood and make amends with those that were slaughtered.
Assassin's Creed Rogue is set in the middle of the 18th century (during the Seven Years War) and takes you on a journey across North America as Shay Patrick Cormac.
Rogue is set to release on November 11 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It will arrive on PC in early 2015.
