The Wii U’s GPU capability and tech specs ‘surprised’ Sumo Digital

The Wii U's graphics processing unit and memory was a pleasant "surprise" to Sumo Digital, the developer of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Speaking to ONM, executive producer Steve Lycett spoke of the challenges the developer faced when creating the game for Nintendo's new console, but did refer to the Wii U's capabilities as a "surprise" while complimenting the upcoming system.

"There are always surprises and unexpected challenges when you develop on a new console," Lycett told ONM. "When we first got our hands on the kit, the first surprise was the capability of the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). We'd been worried that we might need to re-engineer all the effects and shaders in the game, but they worked just fine."

"The Wii U looks as good as any of the HD platforms," he added. "The Wii U has way more memory, so we can take advantage of that with less compression on elements and textures, so it will look all lovely and shiny."

Regardless of the compliments, I'm sure we'll still have the naysayers who deem the Wii U unworthy. Until we get a confirmation from Nintendo detailing the exact specifications of the Wii U, the debate will continue to rage on.
