The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developers want to see free DLC become an industry standard

With the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's New Game + mode, the developers have reached their end of promised free DLC for the game. Last year, about half a year before the game made its official release in May, CD Projekt Red revealed that they had plans to support Wild Hunt with 16 pieces of free DLC.

They specified that this was not a pre-order bonus, season pass bonus, or collector's edition bonus — it was tried and true free DLC for anyone who supported their game by purchasing it. At the time of this reveal, CD Projekt Red's co-founder and CEO Marcin Iwiński revealed the reason behind the free DLC:

"As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached… Cutting to the chase, everyone who buys Wild Hunt will receive 16 specially prepared DLCs absolutely for free, regardless of platform. You don’t have to pre-order, you don’t have to buy any special edition to get them — if you own a copy of Wild Hunt, they’re yours. This is our way of saying thank you for buying our game.”

Now that the free DLC has come to and, — has yet to change his tune about free DLC, in fact, he wants to see it become a trend that every developer adopts.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to all the gamers who played our game and gave these DLCs a try. Nothing makes a developer happier than seeing gamers have fun with what they created. I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule, and I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example.”

The remaining DLC for the game will come in shape of two "massive" game expansions,  "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine." Both expansions promise over 30 hours of additional gameplay, Hearts of Stone is priced at $9.99, while Blood and Wine will cost $19.99.
