It looks like the truth is still out there as Fox has announced that they have picked up The X-Files once again for an 11th season that will continue off of the cliffhanger ending from last year's revival. The show will begin production this summer which will air during the 2017-2018 broadcast season. The 11th season will once again be limited, though it will see an increase in episodes going from six to ten. Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return alongside series creator, Chris Carter, who will write all ten episodes.
There appeared to be some doubt in getting a renewal done for the series which ended its brief run on February 22nd of last year. With over a year gone by and still no word, fan concern was certainly legitimate up until now. Fox Broadcast Company President, David Madden had this to say about the show:
"Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators — these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files."
It seems there is still some hesitation on Fox's part to get the show to the same lengths it used to be, whose seasons used to tally episodes in the 20's. It could be a matter of actor availability, as Gillian Anderson is still working on The Fall and Starz's upcoming American Gods adaptation.
As one of the few revivals to accurately reflect the quality of the original, this is nothing but good news.
