Talk of Top Gun getting a sequel has been going for a while, especially after the rumor hit top speed when Tom Cruise has mentioned he's open to the idea of doing a sequel. A script has allegedly been floating around since 2014 and Cruise even went out to meet a potential producer for the film in 2016.
The Top Gun sequel has finally been confirmed and the confirmation came from none other than Tom Cruise himself. According to Cruise, he will "probably" begin filming Top Gun 2 next year.

The director behind Oblivion (Joseph Kosinski), another film featuring Cruise, is apparently the front-runner to direct Top Gun 2 – at least according to inside sources close to Variety.
