Ubisoft Boss: Assassin’s Creed ‘will be back when it’s ready’

Assassin’s Creed isn’t releasing a main entry game for the first time in 6 years, and that’s a big deal for Ubisoft. It goes without saying that some of the most recent games were…below expectations (see Unity). It’s quite unfortunate for a series that started so promisingly back in 2007 and then upped its game two years later with Assassin’s Creed II.

Yves Guillemot talked with Gamespot about the series’ future and their expectations for it. And you might be surprised to hear that the next game might be further off than you think. When asked why now was the time for the brand to take a hiatus, he said:

What we saw in the development of the next [Assassin’s Creed] was that we had an opportunity to take it to another level. So we said we’ll take all the time it takes to make the experience fantastic. It was feasible because we have other games. There’s a huge potential in this game to revolutionise the IP, so we said, “Let’s make sure we change our model so we have more time and that we can bring back a greater experience.”

When asked whether the company was expecting the next Assassin’s Creed to release next year, he said:

It will be back when it’s ready. That’s when we feel we have something there.

When pressed for a more concrete answer, he remained steadfast, saying:

Yeah. It will be when it’s ready.

Welp. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. I’m still expecting Ubisoft to want another Assassin’s Creed game for 2017, but it is possible that there might be more projects in the pipeline that are further along that have yet to be revealed. If we don’t see a new Assassin’s Creed at E3 2017, we’ll have our answer.
