Despite the fact that we loved ZombiU here at GameZone, awarding the truly terrifying survival horror game a great 8 out of 10 score, not everyone was very happy with the experience. For a lot of folks, the game's difficulty was off-putting, and the old school survival horror gameplay didn't please everyone.
Producer Guillaume Brunier revealed that early reviews in the US really upset and disappointed the development team. Despite the initial frustration, however, as more reviews poured in and fans expressed their adulation for ZombiU, the individuals who worked on the game felt a sense of relief and satisfaction.
"We were really disappointed with the early US reviews," stated Brunier. "We are aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the experience we created but we did not expect so harsh a feedback. However as more and more journalists and gamers played the game, these opinions proved to be a minority. So right now we’re rather pleased with the overall reception of the game."
ZombiU currently has a Metacritic score of 76, with individual scores ranging between the 90s and 40s. Quite the mixed reception, but one that still has many positive reviews. Regarding the reliance on traditional survivor horror gameplay and lack of modern FPS tropes, Brunier stated that the devs never claimed the game was something it wasn't. Good on 'em! Personally, I'm glad ZombiU turned out the way it did. I don't know about you guys, but I like getting the crap scared out of me.
