U.K. developer Elite Systems has made the original Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar available for free on the App Store. The Commodore 64 version, to be precise, dates back to 1985.
The classic role-playing game, set in the land of Britannia under Lord British's rule, is free to download for iOS, but players will have to put up with ads for Electronic Arts and Mythic Entertainment's recent spiritual successor Ultima Forever, which is also free but contains microtransactions. So it's a different kind of "free to play."
Ultima 4 for iOS is a "near 100 percent replica" of the Commodore 64 version. It features bonuses like autosaving and four save slots, a game guide, landscape or portrait play mode, and more.
GOG also offers the game for free (and has since 2011) for those who prefer PC or Mac (pictured).
