UN advised to ban not-yet-created ‘killer robots’

It is fully acknowledged in a report that “Fully autonomous weapons do not yet exist,” but that doesn't mean that which is not yet created can not be banned. The report published by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Harvard Law School’s International Human Rights Clinic and aptly titled Mind the Gap: The Lack of Accountability for Killer Robots, was debuted ahead of an international meeting on lethal autonomous weapons systems at the UN in Geneva (held on April 13th).

The report details that in the future, when fully autonomous weapons exist, no one will be at fault if (and when) their machines cause a death. There are currently no laws guiding who will be liable in such an event and the HRW wants to nip the situation in the bud before there's even a chance of a killer robot doing some killing.

The HRW is calling for the UN to ban "the development, production and use of fully autonomous weapons through an international legally binding” agreement.

Ok. I get it, killer robots are bad. We can look at RoboCop as an example of this (or even Ultron from the Avengers). Fully autonomous killing machines that are meant to protect us can definitely go bad… But why not just make laws deciding who is at fault when they do?

I think robots are pretty cool, personally I would rather a Gundam unity for my protection but I'll take what I can get!
