Nintendo probably isn't making a good first impression for new 3DS or Wii U owners who may have gotten one of the systems for Christmas. Since Christmas Day many of the 3DS and Wii U online services have been down with what Nintendo is calling "technical difficulties."
Depending on the feature you are trying to access, you will likely be greeted with an error code — perhaps one of the following: 111-9000, 102-2931, 107-3057, 111-9001. Though you can look the codes up on Nintendo's website, I'll make it real easy for you to understand: the online network is taking a giant dump.
Over on the online service status page, Nintendo writes for each platform, "Some parts of the online services are experiencing technical difficulties."
Earlier today, Nintendo provided a brief update on the situation through Twitter, though the information is quite vague.
Hi, everyone. We're aware that some of you are encountering issues with eShop and creating NNIDs. Our team is working hard to resolve them…

In the meantime, the company also provided a potential solution to the Nintendo Network ID (NNID) creation issue, which you can read up on here.
