Earlier this year, Daybreak Game Company confirmed that PlanetSide 2 would run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 4. That no longer appears to be the case, as we've received updated word from Daybreak Game Company confirming that PlanetSide 2 could "and probably will" run at a much higher frame rate.
For much of the development process, Daybreak Game Company had been targeting 60 frames per second; however, the intensity on the CPU side — especially during the largescale battles we're accustomed to seeing in the game — resulted in the team settling for a locked 30 FPS. Or so we thought.
Playing the beta, we noticed the frame rate was much closer to 60 frames per second, than 30, which wasn't much of a surprise considering it was running between 50 and 60 FPS when we saw it at events in 2014. Though we originally attributed the upped frame rate to the game still being in beta, it has just been confirmed to us that a higher frame rate is still on the table.
According to Daybreak Game spokesperson, PlanetSide 2 will not be locked at 30 frames per second on PS4. We don't have a specific number to give you, but it was said that the game "probably will" run at much higher rates "most of the time."
For what it's worth, most of our time spent in the game was around 58-60 frames per second, but keep in mind this is before the influx of players that'll arrive when PlanetSide 2 officially launches for PlayStation 4 on June 23rd.
