Another big game has released this week, and obviously, that means another comparison video to flame the war of console fans everywhere. Once again, Digital Foundry has broken down performance by the numbers for this week's major release, Battlefield 1. The comparison is between the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game, and while the two are mostly similar, there are a few differences to be aware of.
First of all, neither game holds a flat resolution or frame rate consistently throughout. The PS4 version comes out slightly ahead on the resolution, fluctuating between 1000p and 900p while the Xbox One version's dynamic resolution flips between 900p and 720p. This is likely in large part due to EA's Frostbyte engine which has a long history of running Xbox One versions of games such as Mirror's Edge Catalyst and Star Wars: Battlefront in flat 720p. While Battlefield 1 performs better than most, it's still a factor to consider.
The frame rate, however, belongs to the Xbox One version, as it experiences fewer drops in framerate. Drops get down into the low 40's at times, particularly when stuff is blowing up, but it is apparent that this affects the PS4 version slightly more than the Xbox One version.
So there you have it, console fans. Battlefield 1 is essentially a 1-1 draw on resolution v performance between the two platforms. No matter which platform you play on, I hope you guys have tons of fun with the game.
