Watch Dogs dev: ‘Hands in pockets was a big thing for us’

Watch Dogs protagonist Aiden Pierce has a unique walk of sorts. He casually strolls the streets of Chicago with his hands in the pockets of his trench coat. Upon first seeing his animations in early trailers and gameplay footage, I didn't think anything of it. Apparently, there's actually a lot that goes into making a character put their hands in their pockets.

"Hands in pocket was a big thing for us," said Ubisoft Montreal animation director Colin Graham. "I never seen anybody really try to do this in a video game before because it's very complicated to make a hand go into a pocket in a believable way, and have the cloth move with the pocket."

To accomplish this, Ubisoft built a rope to hang around the mo-cap actor's neck to help him rest his hands when he walks. As you'll see in the latest behind-the-scenes video, this is just one of the many creative ideas used at Ubisoft Montreal's motion capture facilities while working on its upcoming title Watch Dogs.
