About a year ago, Netflix made one of the largest investments in the company's history when it won a $90 million bidding way for Bright, a cop thriller with fantasy elements written by Max Landis, with Suicide Squad's David Ayer directing, and Will Smith and Joel Edgerton starring. Netflix paid, even more, money to play the teaser embedded above during the Oscars, apparently netting a huge viewer base in the process.
There's not much to take away from the teaser above, only that Will Smith plays a police officer, Orcs come packing shotguns instead of axes, and elves…do whatever it is they're doing in the teaser. Staring? Bondage? I can't really tell.
Netflix sent out a Press Release on Bright to add a bit more clarification on Bright. Here's an excerpt.
Set in an alternate present-day where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been coexisting since the beginning of time, this action-thriller directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch, writer of Training Day) follows two cops from very different backgrounds. Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling both their own personal differences as well as an onslaught of enemies, they must work together to protect a young female elf and a thought-to-be-forgotten relic, which in the wrong hands could destroy everything.
Bright will release on Netflix this December.
