Sea of Thieves is fresh off its quiet release date reveal during The Game Awards 2017; Rare has released yet another behind the scenes video on Sea of Thieves, this time detailing what exactly players will do to progress in the world. Until now, this has been something of a mystery, but the video does clear up a lot of the mystique surrounding the Sea of Thieves experience.
The game world will feature trading posts, and within those posts will be unique trading companies with different quests, which are called Voyages in the game, that you can undertake. There are three trading companies, the Gold Hoarders, the Merchant Alliance, and the Order of Souls. Each trading company represents a different playstyle, so one could have you hunting down and capturing different types of animals, while another will have you battle the undead, and bring the skulls of dead pirates.
Completing voyages within a particular trading company will boost your reputation, and unlock bigger and bolder quests with unique unlockable items. Before setting off on a journey, players can gather together in the captain's quarters to decide which quest to undertake. What's cool about this mechanic is that voyages are physical items in the form of scrolls, and players will throw down whichever voyage scroll they have onto a table in front of all of the other players. The captain will then choose a manuscript, and then the crew makes ready to set sail.
Suffice it to say; Rare has put a lot of thought into their quest design, making everything feel tangible and significant while keeping everything simple.
Sea of Thieves releases on Xbox One and PC on March 20th, 2017.
