Sonic Mania, the embodiment of 25 years of Sonic, is looking better and better with every piece of news. First, we heard it was getting cutscenes in the same style as the 90s cartoons. Then we got a number of stage reveal videos accompanied by some sweet tracks that only 90s Sonic could truly pull off. The cherry on top for that came in the form of a vinyl soundtrack announcement. We even saw what special stages are going to look like. Today, Sega has shown us a returning feature: Competition Mode.
Back in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, we were graced with competition mode. This mode was a split-screen race to the finish line. While the main game was more of a cooperative effort, Competition Mode pitted players against each other, and Sonic Mania is bringing it back.
Rings, items pick-ups, and clear times are all accounted for to see who wins in a competitive race. These rules can be further adjusted to make custom matches.
Sonic Mania has shown over and over that it's a love song to the classic Sonic games, while also bringing something new. It seems the Sonic team has learned what made the blue blur so popular originally, as everything about this game has screamed nostalgia, even the new additions.
The game launches on August 15 for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
