Whenever Microsoft mentions Xbox One in a press release, they refer to it as the “all-in-one entertainment system.” That’s true, for the most part, as the goal with the Xbox One is to become the entertainment hub of your living room. Well today, the Xbox One is one-step closer to delivering on that promise.
Plex released today the first TV app for Xbox One and Xbox 360, featuring an updated design that makes it easy to browse and enjoy personal media on your television. For those unfamiliar with the service, Plex organizes all of your personal media and allows for the effortless streaming of videos, music, and photos, wherever you store them, on any device. Although that’s the intended use, there’s also a number of users who use Plex to stream their torrented movies or files to the big screen, and now Plex on Xbox makes that easier than ever.
Plex will be made available on Xbox One tomorrow, October 7, to Plex Pass premium subscribers. It can be downloaded in the Apps store on Xbox Live. Premium plans start at $4.99 per month, but there’s also the option for $39.99 for the year or a lifetime subscription for $149.99. Benefits include Plex Sync, which lets you download content to your phone or tablet and enjoy it offline; Cloud Sync, which uploads media files less than 2GB to cloud services like Dropbox and Google Drive so that they can be watched anywhere with Wi-Fi; easy access to HD movie trailers; and free downloads of the Android and Roku apps. For now, being a Plex Pass subscriber will be the only way to use the new Xbox One app, although it will be made available for a one-time fee to everyone else at a later date.
