Wii U must be priced below $300 to succeed, says Pachter

For Nintendo's next generation games console to succeed it must be priced below $300, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has claimed.

"The console must be priced below $300 to succeed, in my opinion, and best at $249 or less," Pachter said to CVG.

"Nintendo is intent upon repeating their success with the Wii," he said likely referring to the notion that the innovative GamePad tablet will help sell units the same way the Nintendo Wii's motion-based gameplay revolutionized the industry.

"While I agree that the Wii U controller is sufficiently novel and different from traditional controllers, I am not sure that there is a killer app that will drive Wii U adoption the way Wii Sports did for the Wii."

"At E3 I was not particularly impressed with many of the games, and in particular found Sing baffling. I don't understand why I need a tablet to read Karaoke words rather than reading the words on the TV screen instead," he added.

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one baffled with Sing and it's painfully bad trailer. Nintendo did reveal a robust lineup of titles for the Wii U, but the majority of them are re-releases of games that have been out for over a year. There isn't really any mind blowing game that will help drive units at launch – especially if it's priced above $300. Although, if rumors of Black Ops 2 for the Wii U are true, then it could help boost sales.
