World of Warcraft subscriptions up slightly to 7.8 million

World of Warcraft's subscriptions aren't nearly what they used to be, but the latest figure reported by Activision Blizzard today showed a slight bump in subscribers for the first time in what seemingly feels like forever.

Despite its age, World of Warcraft remains the number one subscription-based MMORPG with approximately 7.8 million subscribers as of December 31, 2013. That's a slight increase from theĀ 7.6 million reported back in November 2013 for the third quarter. Prior to this quarter's increase, World of Warcraft had been consistently losing subscribers. The 7.6 million reported in November represented a new low for the long-standing MMORPG which at one point boasted more than 12 million subscribers (back in 2010).

The steady drop in subscribers had led to increased speculation that Activision Blizzard could consider shifting to some sort of free-to-play model; however, today's report could help restore faith in the game. It may not be the powerhouse it once was, but 7.8 million subscribers is nothing to scoff at.

Looking ahead, World of Warcraft could see another increase in subscribers with the release of its new expansion, Warlords of Draenor. The upcoming expansion is expected to increase the level cap to 100, introduce updated character models, add an entirely new world, and implement garrisons that can be built and upgraded.
