Xbox executive celebrates Xbox being “back on top” in terms of console’s strong sales

Xbox One had a rocky start when it launched in 2013. Kinect was forced in, the messaging was poor, and it was more expensive than the PS4. The PS4's sales have been skyrocketing since launch and many thought it would take a miracle for Xbox to take the lead in the monthly NPD.

While the console hasn't sold more units overall, the Xbox One has been successfully beating out PS4 since the launch of the Xbox One S in August. The Xbox 360 dominated the market before the next-gen consoles were released, so it's been interesting to see the role reversals between Sony and Microsoft this generation.

To boast their return as the NPD king, Aaron Greenberg from Xbox tweeted out how grateful he was for the support of Xbox fans. "So grateful to everyone who helped us get back on top! #DontCallitAComeback"

The Xbox One is most likely dominating due to its fairly low price at the moment and all the exclusives it has. For the holiday season, Xbox has Gears of War 4, Recore, and Forza Horizon 3, 2 of which have had stellar reviews for the most part.

PlayStation however, has had all but one of their games pushed out of 2016. The Last Guardian is the only game Sony will be releasing this holiday season (if not delayed, once again), and that game isn't exactly going to move systems since it's not a mainstream title like a Gears of War or Forza.

PlayStation does have the PS4 Pro and the PSVR, but those are brand new expensive pieces of hardware and the messaging for the PS4 Pro seems a bit unclear to many right now. As of May 2016, the PS4 is at 40 million units sold and is projected to hit 60 million by April of next year.

Only time will tell if Microsoft can catch up to Sony with their massive lead, many speculate that Xbox has sold roughly 20-30 million units but there is no official confirmation as Microsoft has not shared any real solid numbers on the console's sales.
