Sadly, July's first Xbox game available through the new "Games with Gold" promotion is not Assassin's Creed 2 or Halo 3, as we had previously believed. Rather, your first free Xbox 360 game for July, available today, is Defense Grid: The Awakening, a tower defense game normally available for 800 Microsoft Points.
Not exactly the blockbuster AAA title we hoped for, but it's still a free game, so it's hard to complain. If you wish to download the game for free, you must do so between now and July 15th. The second free game for the month will be available on July 16th, though we don't yet know what it will be.
Microsoft's Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb only said that Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 were only mentioned "as part of the program" and pointed out that "no date was given for their release."
"I don't know what titles will be released when, but I'll let you know what they are when I find out," he said on Twitter.
