Cars and soccer, a combination no one in their right mind would have ever put together. Well, except maybe Psyonix back in 2008 when they released the original, titled Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. But Rocket League elevates the game to new heights.
While now the game is full of crazy level mutators, extra cars, new stadiums and even some new balls to play around with, the original Rocket League was still in a league of its own. Sorry, I had to.
Two teams of agile cars go up against each other, trying to score a goal using only their driving skills and stunt-tastic flips and boosts. It also helps that the ball is twice as big as most of the cars. But don't let the giant target fool you, this game isn't easy.
Rocket League was such a refreshing multiplayer-focused game. In an age dominated by Shooters and traditional Sports games, Rocket League really flips the multiplayer scene on its head. And despite there being players who are obviously better than you, or I will ever be, Rocket League manages to do a good job at putting players on a somewhat level playing field, since the sport and its physics are absolutely ridiculous.
It's also one of the best multiplayer games to play with your friends. Either split-screen or online, getting a bunch of your buddies together and taking on random opposing teams made numerous nights infinitely better. You'll cheer when you unexpectedly score a goal by undeliberately driving into it. You'll sob when a team performs aerial after aerial goals, and wonder if you'll ever be that good.
And hey, if you were on the PS4, you got this bad boy for free, which must have done wonders for the game. Rocket League is also available on PC, and will be coming to Xbox One early next year.
