Contra Experiences ReBirth on WiiWare

I do love a good surprise, and though it kind of runs against the “gotta get as much info as early as possible” mindset of being a games writer, I have to admit that this whole “don’t reveal something until it’s almost done” mentality publishers are taking on is kind of growing on me.

The latest such instance, as you might have guessed, is Contra ReBirth, which seems to be born of a similar mindset to Konami’s recent WiiWare shooter Gradius ReBirth. As 1UP says, “what’s next, a Castlevania Rebirth?” Hey, I’m down with that. In fact, it kind of makes me just a little sad that Sonic the Hedgehog doesn’t fall under Konami’s jurisdiction, if you get what I’m saying.

Konami’s Japanese website has updated to include the above screens, plus the price of 1,000 Wii Points (sold!) and a release date of… May 12th?! That’s next week!

1UP also notes that “it’s a throwback to the the 8 and 16-bit games — this looks as if it could be a direct sequel to the Super Nintendo’s Contra III.” Of course, that’s what I thought Contra 4 was– and to be honest, I’m really looking forward to this, but from these screens, WayFoward’s Contra 4 looks better so far.

Which really leads to the question of who the heck is developing this one, anyway?

Some additional information from GoNintendo reveals that the game “is going to have co-op, but as far as I can tell, it’s only going to be local.” Damn, still no online team-ups… unless you count the Xbox LIVE Arcade versions of the arcade versions of Contra and Super Contra, and from the horror stories I’ve heard, I don’t think anyone does.

We’ll be sure to bring any new information about this title to you as it comes up. Hopefully, the wait for this won’t be as long as for Gradius ReBirth.

Say, you know what would be awesome? A “Metal Gear ReBirth.” I always favored the top-down games.
