They say money makes the world go round, and that certainly rings true in Destiny. While many people think that Glimmer is practically useless, since upgrades for gear are generally cheap, the best use for it is to level up the Cryptarch.
The Cryptarch is essentially the Deckard Cain of Destiny, as he identifies encrypted items. Every time you let him decrypt an item, or you buy an encrypted item from him, it will slowly level him up. When you reach a new level, you'll get a reward in the mail which usually consists of a Legendary item. Thus having a ton of Glimmer will allow you to keep on buying items from the Cryptarch, and in return, it will allow him to level up much faster.
This video from AllSilenced shows us how to do this Glimmer Run in the most effective way possible, where you can end up with up 50k Glimmer an hour.
First, you'll need to start the Moon mission, Shrine of Oryx, and select the Level 12 difficulty. Once you start the mission, keep playing until you get to the Hall of Wisdom, where the Glimmer Run officially starts. The area has a bunch of Yellow enemies, which are tougher versions of standard ones. Not only do they drop more Glimmer, they also drop an item called Black Wax Idol. This is extremely important as that consumable allows you to double the amount of Glimmer you get per kill. This item then lasts for about 10 minutes, however, the area that you'll be farming in has enemies dropping these regularly. Once all the enemies are killed in this particular area, jump off into the lava and repeat the same area again.
