E3 2008: Sony Announces TV and Movie Store; Renting and Purchasing Available

Sony announced at their press conference this afternoon a massive effort to provide movies and TV shows from across the spectrum of studios and content providers on its PlayStation Network service.

Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s president and CEO, sounded off the following “day one” studio partners: Sony Picures (obviously), Fox Film and TV, MGM, Lionsgate, Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount, Turner and Funimation.

Starting tonight, users will be able access both standard and high definition content through the XMB with a single log-in to the PSN. The upper-left of the menu has a special Video tab, leading to the video store. Pricing will be $1.99 per rental for TV episodes and movies in standard-def, and $2.99 to $5.99 for HD versions. Movies can also be purchased for $14.99.

One of the most exciting aspects of Sony’s media blitz is its connection to the PSP. According to Tretton, users will be able to “put [their content] on PSP as well, and take it with you on the road.” The media can also be placed on “multiple devices.”
