One of the factions you can meet and join in Fallout 4 is the Railroad. To meet them, however, you need to first find them and complete the “Road to Freedom” questline. While not incredibly difficult, it is a bit confusing, especially for those not familiar with Boston’s Freedom Trail. Below you’ll find a walkthrough for completing the entire “Road to Freedom” questline which will introduce you to the Railroad faction.
To begin the quest, you must first visit Diamond City.
While in Diamond City, head to the back alley behind the Commonwealth Weaponry and the building that says “Wanted! Bounties here”. Turn to the right as if you were heading towards Valentine Detective Agency and you’ll see two Residents talking about the Railroad, believed to be a fairytale.
After listening to them for a while, one of the Residents will mention “Follow the Freedom Trail” and you’ll receive the quest “Road to Freedom.”
Boston Common to follow the Road to Freedom
Head to the Boston Common location (you can fast travel from your Pip-Boy). Once in the right location, you’ll see a sign that says “At Journey’s End Follow Freedom’s Lantern.” The quest will then ask you to “Continue following the Freedom Trail.”

For those unfamiliar, the Freedom Trail is actually a real thing in Boston. It can be confusing for those who don’t already know about it. Basically, the Freedom Trail is a line of red bricks that runs throughout the city.
While following the trail, each new location will have a plate in front of it. Make sure you look at the plate, it will have two clues: A red number and an arrow pointing towards a specific letter. Remember these at every location (or just look below)!

The Old North Church
The trail ends at the Old North Church. Head inside and then look to your right. You’ll see a white lantern. Head into that hallway and follow it downstairs into the brick underground hallway.
At the end you’ll see the Freedom Trail Ring. This is the puzzle where those clues will come in useful.

Using the clues from the trail, spin the ring counter clockwise until you get to the appropriate letter. Once at the correct letter, push the button.
