Look, I love the Final Fantasy franchise. Sure, I’ve never actually finished a single one of the games, as around nine-tenths of the way through the game I get tired of the grind. Due to the magic of YouTube I can see the ending without fifteen hours of grinding. Ta-dah!
But that’s neither here nor there, for while the games are good, Final Fantasy has struggled a lot over the last year. Final Fantasy XIII was a beautiful, if linear and tutorial heavy game that kinda played itself. Final Fantasy XIV was even worse, a good looking MMO that bordered on unplayable. And let’s not even talk about the increasing stupidity of the name of the franchise. For something that is supposed to be “final,” twelve main titles, two MMOs, and a plethora of spin-offs say nothing about finality.
Maybe Square-Enix has picked up on all of this negative energy toward their flagship franchise, and they’ve got something new and fresh in store. According to Siliconera, SE has filed a trademark in Europe’s trademark office for something called Final Fantasy Type-0. Additionally, there is a logo of “Type-0” written in kanji. There is very little here in magical and/or ethereal plots involving crystals, and from logo alone, whatever this is, it looks edgier. Is this a series reboot? A spin-off? There are a lot of questions here, that’s for sure. Thankfully, SE has an event happening on January 18 for their 1st Production dev team. If Final Fantasy Type-0 has anything to do with them, this could be the next big game from SE.
