Gearbox Folks on Duke Nukem Forever

The public reveal of the new Duke Nukem Forever, built by Borderlands developer Gearbox Software upon the rubble of the decade-long vaporware title, is still underway. We’re expecting high quality footage and maybe even a trailer to hit the web soon, but in the meantime, what do the folks behind the game have to say about it?

During a live 2K Games USTREAM of the announcement and hands-on time with DNF, Gearbox’s Marketing Director, Steve Gibson, and Executive Vice President, Brian Martel, took a few minutes to chat with the nearly 20,000 people watching. Although the microphone was cutting out and the video was laggy, we managed to jot down a few of their comments for your curious eyes to consume.

First and foremost, the developers at Gearbox seem just as excited as the fans waiting eagerly in line to get their hands on the game.

“We’re so excited that we’re going to be actually shipping this game next year,” said Gibson. “I don’t think anybody believes it yet.”

Indeed, there were several reports of PAX-goers walking by the DNF booth and wondering aloud whether it was a joke. As far as the game itself goes, Gibson revealed that Duke will be as raunchy as ever.

“How crude can this be?” he said they’ve been asking themselves during development. “Well, there isn’t really a limit. If you play the demo, there’s very offensive things going on.” Unfortunately, we haven’t had a real glimpse of those offensive things yet, but knowing the internet, we will soon.

“We’re just pushing the game as close to AO [Adults Only] as we can while still making it an M rated game,” Gibson added.

Martel is confident in Gearbox’s ability to do the game justice. “We just knew that we couldn’t let Duke die,” he said. “We knew that we had all the right people.”

When asked how they managed to keep the game a secret (albeit a not-well-kept one) for so long, Martel replied, “A lot of blindfolds, secret locations, that sort of thing.”

Keep an eye out for footage of the game as soon as it becomes available.
