Japanese sales have continued to soar, as the week of November 28th to December 4th saw the release of Resident Evil 4, Monster Hunter Portable, Slime Dragon Quest 2 in the region. Known as Biohazard 4 in Japan, the port of the GameCube title sold an impressive two hundred and thirty thousand units in its first week on store shelves for the Playstation 2.

However, the main story involving the latest sales figures is undoubtedly the dominance of the handheld gaming systems. Sales of the Playstation Portable saw a boost by the release of Monster Hunter Portable. Not to be outdone, the Nintendo DS sold one hundred and seventy thousand units on the heels of the popular games Animal Crossing DS and the continued success of the Brain Training series.

Released roughly one year ago in the region, Nintendo has sold close to four million DS systems in Japan. The company’s portable gaming systems have comprised seven out of top ten selling games in the region for the previous week, with five attributed to the DS.

Analysts in the region expect more of the same in the coming weeks, as anticipated titles such as Mario Kart DS, Mario and Luigi Partners in Time, and a new iteration of the Brain Training series are released, and currently available games like Animal Crossing DS and Slime Dragon Quest 2 are expected to remain strong. In its second week on store shelves, Nintendo’s “life sim” has sold close to five hundred thousand copies, and is expected to subsequently reach the one million mark in the forthcoming weeks and months.
