High-profile video game movies have a habit of dissipating into vapor. Whether it be Halo, which devolved into a series of promo films, Metroid, which we’ve heard almost nothing about, or Legend of Zelda, for which I’ll never forgive IGN, it seems like only the Dungeon Sieges and Max Paynes of the world find their way onto the big screen. But now that Legendary Pictures is co-financing Gears of War, things are about to change.
Legendary, which also lent a helping hand to a little picture called “The Dark Knight,” has a reputation for financing films that are more of a sure thing, while giving a cold shoulder to early development projects.
Therefore, one can assume that Gears is likely well on its way to becoming a film franchise, and not just some dumb video game.
Now as for whether or not it will be a good movie, we’ll just have to wait and see.
