Linux On PS3 HDD

Ken Kutaragi, Sony Computer Entertainment President, has revealed in an interview with Impress PC Watch new information about the PS3. Namely, about the game data storage.

First of all, the PS3 won’t come shipped with a Hard Drive. One of the reasons being is that Sony is exploring different sized hard drives to see what will work the best. During the interview, he talked about network drives, in the future, that could be accessed from anywhere. He conceded that Hard Drives are still needed, however, for the PS3.

Another interesting factoid comming from the interview, is that the PS3 will run on an “alternate” Operating System. Yes, Linux will be installed on the Hard Drives of PS3s. Interestingly, the Cell chip can handel more than one OS so if developers choose to use another OS, they are more then able to.
